countdown to insanity

we are one grand jeté from a flight to guam & still no orders. i'm having issues because..... A. we have no scheduled move date for movers to come get our stuff, so we're paying rent & utilities for a vacant-ish apartment. B. we will stop receiving BAH as soon as we sign onto base housing in guam. C. we can only take 3 checked bags without paying a fee because our first flight is on a different airline taking us back to jeff's "duty station" - it is not an international flight & usairways was sucky on the phone about our "situation". welcome to the military huh. so awesome. i just hope we can get reimbursed for BAH if we have to pay rent for the rest of this month & if we have to pay to check some bags, which we will most likely have to do because i'm not sure i can live out of 1 shared suitcase until dec 30...... in case you're wondering the other 2 checked bags are jeff's uniforms. so i have to find the biggest suitcase ever (not too big because airlines will charge you for that too) in order to fit the rest of our clothes, records & papers, toiletries, shoes..... i think we can make it work, just at a place right now where i just have to vent.
i will learn to live minimally. it's ok. it'll be kinda nice to not have to worry about stuff. right now we are cluttered with stuff- stuff in storage piles, stuff in HHG piles..... so much stuff to sort through. i guess this "situation" is a blessing. in disguise.

Don't worry about your luggage- we checked 9 bags and carried on 7- yes- 16 in total for 2 adults and a baby, plus a carseat and stroller. The gate agents are MUCH nicer than people on the phone. Just have a copy of orders with you and more than likely you will have no problem. In fact, his orders should also have an additional baggage allowance for extra weight too (which means if you do get charged, then the AF will reimburse some of the expenses). Just let the agents know you are MOVING to Guam and are on orders... we flew on Delta, Northwest and Continental from Ohio, to Atlanta to Hawaii for a 4 day layover and then to Guam and didn't have a problem anywhere a long the way.

Also, you should get to do an unaccompanied shipment- ours arrived when we did, so we got reinforcements of clothes once we got out of the hotel. Plus, if it makes you feel any better- you'll be suprised at how many clothes you actually need here- especially while in the hotel- you'll probably live in a bathing suit and flip flops :) You should also get a dislocation allowance which will help cover some of these "unexpected" costs.

I really should have emailed all of this to you :) I hope you get your orders soon and yes, this is military life, but it gets easier and everything will fall into place! It is frustrating, and you have earned your right to vent!!

Email me if you need anything.... terrelldotmichael at gmaildotcom

Ditto what Terrell said!!! We had TONS of (all overweight) luggage and didn't pay a dime since my hubs had his orders with him. AND... might I suggest in your "rush" shipment... pack towels, bedsheets, pillows, shower curtain, a trash can & trash bags, one or two pots or pans, a couple cheap glasses and a couple of plates, silverwear, etc. We didn't pack ANY of that and had to borrow/buy everything!!!!!! And of course, just let me know if you need anything!!! tatruesdell@gmail.com
